Wetin Be Dividend? How Dem Dey Pay You (AAPL Example)

Wetin be dividend? Na piece of company profit paid per share. See the four dates, wetin AAPL pay for 10 shares, and the 30% US and 10% NGX tax wey dey cut am.

Wetin be dividend? Dividend na piece of company profit wey the board decide to share with shareholders, and dem dey pay am per share to anybody wey name dey the company register on the record date. Most times na cash wey go enter your brokerage account or your bank account. Sometimes na extra shares (bonus shares). For this post we go use Apple (AAPL), wey plenty Naija people dey hold through apps like Bamboo or Trove, to show you the four dividend dates, the real money for 10 shares, the two tax cuts wey go touch that money, and why US companies dey pay four times a year.

Wetin be dividend, in plain talk?

When company make profit, e get two roads: keep the money inside the business (buy machine, pay down debt) or share some to the owners. The owners na the shareholders, and the piece wey each person collect na dividend. Dem dey pay am per share, no be per person. If company declare 20 cents per share and you hold 10 shares, your own na 20 cents times 10, wey be $2. Same rate for everybody. Wetin change na how many shares you hold.

Three things to hold before we enter the dates:

  • Na the board of directors dey decide the amount, every single time. Company fit raise am or cut am, and our dividend cuts post show how the cut side dey happen.
  • Cash na the main form. Bonus shares (scrip or bonus issue) na the footnote: instead of cash, dem give you extra shares, like one new share for every five wey you hold. Your share count go up, but no money enter your hand.
  • Dividend no be interest. Fixed deposit get promised rate. Dividend na whatever the board declare this quarter, and next quarter na fresh decision.

The four dividend dates, with AAPL as real example

Every dividend get four dates, and the order never change: declaration date, ex-dividend date, record date, payment date. The table below na the last eight dividends wey AAPL don pay, latest one on top. The AAPL dividend page keep the same record fresh all year.

Take the top row and follow the four dates:

  1. Declaration date (Jul 30, 2026). The day Apple board announce say dem go pay $0.27 per share, and announce the other three dates same time.
  2. Ex-dividend date (Aug 10, 2026). From this day, anybody wey buy the stock no go see that dividend. To collect am, you must don buy at least one trading day before. Our ex-dividend date explainer cover am deep.
  3. Record date (Aug 10, 2026). The day the company check the shareholder register to see who dem go pay. Since US market move to T+1 settlement (your trade settle one business day after you buy), the ex-dividend date and the record date na the same day for US stocks. The difference dey explained for record date vs ex-dividend date.
  4. Payment date (Aug 13, 2026). The day the cash leave Apple and enter your broker account, few days after the record date for AAPL. Some companies take weeks.

Fit I sell on the ex-dividend date and still collect? Yes. As long as you hold the stock at the close of the day before, the dividend na your own, even if you sell that morning. Full answer dey can I sell on the ex-dividend date.

How much you go collect for 10 shares of AAPL?

Make we do the arithmetic with the real amount. Ten shares times the latest AAPL payout na $2.7 gross. If you hold the stock from Nigeria through a US broker, the broker go remove 30% US withholding tax before the money reach you: $0.81 comot, and $1.89 land for your account. The panel below run the same sum for the last four payments, wey be one full year of AAPL dividends, with a running total of the net.

For the whole year, 10 shares of AAPL drop $7.42 net inside your account after the 30% cut. Na small money, and that na the honest picture: AAPL dividend na small per share, and 10 shares na small holding. The number wey matter when you dey compare companies na dividend yield (the yearly dividend divided by the share price), and we break that one down for what is dividend yield.

The two tax cuts wey Naija investor dey see

These na rules, no be numbers wey we compute, so note the date: as of September 2026.

US stocks through Bamboo, Trove, Chaka, Risevest and the rest: 30% withholding. America dey tax dividend wey US company pay to foreigner, and the default rate na 30%. Countries wey get tax treaty with America pay less (many pay 15%). Nigeria no get income tax treaty with the United States, so the rate for Nigerian resident stay 30%. The W-8BEN form wey your app make you fill na to confirm say you no be US person. E no bring the rate down for Nigeria. The broker remove the tax at source, so wetin you see for the app na the net. The full story for people outside America dey our dividend withholding tax for non-US investors guide.

NGX stocks: 10% withholding tax (WHT). For companies on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), the registrar remove 10% WHT before dem pay you, and that 10% na final tax on the dividend for individual. To collect am for bank, you need e-dividend mandate, the form wey link your CSCS account to your bank account so the money enter direct instead of paper warrant. Dividend wey no get mandate dey sit down as unclaimed dividend.

So the same headline dividend get different net for two reasons: the tax rate, and who dey remove am (foreign broker versus Nigerian registrar).

Why AAPL dey pay four times but Zenith or GTCO pay one or two?

Na market habit. Most big US companies pay quarterly, and the board declare the amount fresh every quarter. NGX companies mostly pay final dividend once a year after the AGM approve the accounts. Some big banks like Zenith and GTCO add interim dividend around half-year, so you go see two payments instead of one. Na the timing of the cheque wey different, and the year total na wetin to compare.

The panel below put AAPL side by side with Bank of America (BAC) and Costco (COST) for the last 12 months: how many times each one pay, the latest amount per share, and the total per share for the year.

Yield na wetin that amount mean for every dollar you put in. Always ask for the second one.
